I'll be your light

Melinda stares at the ceiling in her bedroom. She is wide-awake. Thoughts swimming through her mind, racing towards the finish line, the answer. She tosses and turns in her bed, hoping that a certain position will give her an answer. Lying on her side makes her think of Yukwon, lying on her front makes her think of the hug and the kiss, lying on her back makes her want more. She becomes embarrassed with her own thoughts. She pulls the blanket over her head and breathes heavily. She asks herself; ‘What do we do now?’

Yukwon’s mind has drifted off. He sits on the kitchen bench with a bowl of cereal in front of him, waiting to be eaten. He stares into space as his mind flies through the events of yesterday; butterflies, butterflies, falling, butterflies, butterflies and more butterflies. All he remembers is being in high spirits. He smiles to himself, he hasn’t even realised it yet. So he sits with a wondering mind as his cereal goes soggy thinking; what do we do know?

They exit their apartments at the same time. Melinda catches Yukwon look at her, they both turn away and smile to themselves. Yukwon waits for her as she makes her way to the stairs. “Good morning Melinda.” Yukwon smiles cheerfully. “Good morning.” She feels way too nervous to be talking to him this early in the morning. “Where are you going so early in the morning?” he asks her. They make their way down the stairs. “Uni.” She replies. “What about you?” ‘Damn am I stupid? Of course she is going to school.’ Yukwon silently scolds himself for asking a dumb question. “Uh, I’m going to Young Star. They have a photo shoot today. I’m not too sure if Yijung is coming.” He didn’t have to add the last part about Yijung. “Have fun.” She says. They reach the bottom of the stairs. “Can I take you somewhere this weekend?” Yukwon asks nervously. Melinda smiles and says yes a little too quickly. “Wear the dress I gave you.” He smiles bashfully. “OK.” She replies. They exit and go their separate ways; Melinda to uni and Yukwon to Young Star. They both walk with big smiles on their faces and butterflies in their bellies as they wait for the weekend to come.

Unfortunately, they are both busy on the day they had planned to go out. “I’m sorry.” They both say simultaneously. Melinda giggles. “I have a 10 page report to finish for uni.” She puts her hands in a praying position. “I’m sorry.” She says cutely. “I’m sorry too.” Yukwon says, rubbing the back of his neck. “Young Star want me to do a photo shoot with a bunch of people and I have to travel far to get there.” He imitates Melinda’s praying apology. She wacks his hands. “Don’t tease me.” She says with a light laugh. Yukwon takes a small box from his pocket and gives it to Melinda “Kind of like a present to say I’m sorry for being busy on our date night.” He says shyly. Melinda opens the box and reveals a bracelet with her name on beautifully inscribed in it.

Red flushes her cheeks and she struggles to keep her happiness in. She jumps onto Yukwon, drowning him in a hug. “Thank you!” she says happily. She instantly puts it on. “I love it!” she says. Yukwon blushes. “I-I’m glad you like it.” He says with an awkward laugh. They arrange another time to go out. “Next week? Same day?” Yukwon suggests. “Yes.” Melinda agrees instantly. “Can’t wait.” Yukwon says without thinking. He covers his mouth. Melinda giggles. “I can’t wait either.” She smiles. Yukwon contemplates whether he should kiss her good bye or not, but Melinda is already making her way out of the apartment complex. He sighs happily. ‘Maybe next time.’ He thinks.
