I'll be your light

So it’s settled. Starting tonight, Yukwon will be attending a night school to learn English. He figures that if he wants to communicate with Melinda and get to know her better, he should at least know how to speak her language. With the extra help of Minhyuk who is fluent in English, he will learn faster.

On Wednesday, Yukwon decides to visit Melinda at her apartment. He knocks at her door with an arranged box of flowers in his arms. “House warming gift?” he says in broken English. She smiles and nods, impressed at his progress. “I’ve finally finished packing.” She smiles, leading him inside. Yukwon only recognises the words I’ve and finished, so he guesses what she said. “Good.” He smiles back with a nod of his head. “I’m learning English.” He boasts happily. “That’s good!” Melinda laughs. “Maybe now we can talk more.” He raises his eyebrow. “Still not very good at English.” He laughs half-heartedly. “Me and you, talk more in English.” She says in Hangul. “My Hangul is very bad.” She admits, speaking iin English. An alarm beeps, reminding Melinda that it is time for work. “I have to go to work.” She tells him. “I come too?” he asks, anxious for her answer. But she smiles. “Sure.”’ She says.
He sits in the passenger seat of her car as she drives to her workplace. She stops at a café that he has never seen before. She brings him inside and sweet smells fill his nose. “Hello everyone!” Melinda says happily. Her manager embraces her, making Yukwon twitch. “Hello Melinda!” he almost yells. She introduces the two men to each other. “Cameron this is my neighbour Yukwon, Yukwon this is my manager Cameron.” They shake hands and Yukwon finds a table to sit at and enjoy some coffee. “You keep bringing in new boys.” Cameron says to her, nudging her ribs. She brushes him away. “Don’t be silly.” She pokes her tongue out at him.

While working, Melinda will glance at Yukwon from time to time. He does the same, watching her while she smiles at her customers. They make sudden eye contact, but Yukwon instantly looks away. He smiles to himself and sips his coffee. Someone approaches Yukwon and takes a seat in the chair opposite him. He looks up to see a beautiful woman in her mid 40’s sitting in the chair, looking at him. “May I help you?” he asks nervously. She takes out a business card. “I don’t usually do business like this, but you just caught my eye.” She says. He reads the business card while she talks.

“You have this modelling aura around you and I think you’d become big really quick. You are handsome, and bold. Youngsters are so full of energy. Young Stars encourages young adults or even teenagers to model to build confidence and skills. The pay is very good and you get to be seen in many of the famous magazines in Korea.” She nods her head really fast as if she is responding to herself. “So…” Yukwon says. “You want me to be a model?” She clasps her hands together. “Yes I do!” Yukwon sighs while he thinks about the offer. “I have one of my models meeting me here today. If you would like, you can ask him some questions about what it is like. He’s been with us for quite a while. He’ll be here any second.” Ms Hyoyeon says with a little desperation in her tone. Yukwon tries to finish his coffee before the model comes. Ms Hyoyeon starts frantically waving. “Yijung! Over here!” she yells. Yukwon almost spits his coffee back into the cup. He looks up to see Yijung grabbing a chair and sitting with them. He freezes when he sees Yukwon. “Oh…Yukwon.” Yijung says. Ms Hyoyeon screws her face. “You know him, Yijung?” she asks, almost nastily. “Yeah…we’ve met once or twice.” Yijung says. “That’s good, because I’m trying to get him to model with us.” Ms Hyoyeon says happily. Yijung looks at Yukwon with surprise in his eyes. Yukwon just shrugs.

“Look at the camera Yukwon, while Yijung doesn’t! Look away Yijung!” Mr Hun shouts. Yukown does as Mr Hun says and looks at the camera. He decided to take the modelling job, only part time. He didn’t want to look like a fool without a job in front of Melinda, and this is the chance for him to earn some money for himself, so he took the job. This is his first photoshoot, two weeks after his encounter with Ms Hyoyeon. Young Star decided to take photos of both him and Yijung together, to start him off. He doesn’t know what magazine he’ll get put in, neither does he care. He just wants his pay.

“Great work you two!” Ms Hyoyeon praises. She pats them both on the head like they are pets. “You can both go now, come back next week unless we call you!” she giggles. “Can I see the photos?” Yijung asks. “Sure! This is the one I want to publish.” Ms Hyoyeon says. She gives the boys one photo. Yukwon can hardly believe that it is him.
