Chapter 20
I can't stay here forever, who knows where those psychos are.
I muster up some energy and stand on my achy feet.
At least I was smart enough to keep this. I look down at my phone. I'm scrolling through the contacts, but there’s really no one I can call, I just need to find a hospital. I limp my way back towards the street till I find a convenience store on the corner. I walk into the store and am enveloped in warmth and bright white light. The man behind the counter is busy restocking cigarettes.
“Ahjussi, excuse me, but do you know the number for a cab?” I say through my chattering teeth.
“One second” he mumbles. I feel awkward so I just look down at my muddy feet. I hear him shuffle around some more.
“Omo! Omo! Omo! Gwenchana?!” He looks at me with the most startled expression I've ever seen.
“Ne, I just need to go to the hospital.” I say shyly.
“Ani! No person is ok if they need the hospital and look like you! I'll take you! You poor thing! Where’s your guardian?”
He must be talking about the Kim’s right?
“They're not home right now.”
He goes to a back room and brings out two coats and a pair of slippers. I really look at him this time. He doesn't seem harmful. His face is withered with wrinkles and his hair is sparse but still there, his glasses are black and he’s wearing a turtleneck with khakis. He seems like an average old guy.
He seems the most trustworthy right now anyways.
“Here, slip these on, on put this on as best as you can without hurting your arm, araso?”
“Ne” As I put everything on, he goes and locks up the doors and brings me a hot chocolate and a triangle bibimbap. His kindness makes me tear up. This stranger is helping someone like me, that’s not something you see every day. We get in his car, heater blasting and head to the hospital.

We get to the hospital and go in for registration.
Everyone is staring at me like I'm the wild one. If only they knew.
The ahjussi insists on staying to make sure everything goes okay, but I tell him I'll be fine and he leaves. Once I turn in the papers the registration nurse contacts the Kim’s and lets them know about my situation.
When the doctor sees me he makes a face similar to the one the ahjussi made.
“Omo! What happened here?!”
“I was attacked” by psychos.
“Ok, we'll get the police involved soon, but let’s get you checked out first.”
He looks over me almost everywhere. It’s uncomfortable, but I deal with it. Let’s get the nurses to attend to your feet while I deal with this.” He points at my arm. Another doctor comes in to look at my arm. Everything seems so blurry and fast. I'm exhausted.
“Okay, the best way to deal with this is to pull it out. I'll have Dr. Kwon here hold you down and I'll pull ok? And then we're going to clean it with antiseptic, which may burn and then stitch you up.”
I just nod and follow along. I lay sideways on the crinkly paper, staring at the pale blue curtain that separates me from everyone else. Dr. Kwon blocks that off so now I looking at a white coat. He leans his body over me, putting more pressure on my hurt ribs. I make a small gasp, but he continues to hold.
“Okay…1…2…”
I hold my breath and clench my fists, waiting for the pain.
“3” I can feel the ridges of the blades cut me again on their way out. The blood starts coloring my shirt again but warms my cold skin. The pain almost makes me want to scream. I feel my eyes and cheeks getting hot. I can’t stop the tears coming. Dr. Kwon and the other Dr. talk fast but I can't hear anything except for a loud ringing.
My vision gets even hazier.
Everything goes black.
