Fateful Encounter

Luhan didn’t look very different compared to the last time I saw him, but somehow, his vibes were different. I can feel my heart pounding in my chest, and I inwardly smile. I don’t have to feel guilty about my feelings anymore.
“Luhan! Waaa, long time no see!” I grin at him, and his unsure expression is replaced by a smile.
“Yeah, definitely!” He comes closer, and his eyes flicker to the chair across from me.
“Sit, sit! We have to catch up!” I don’t have to put on an act anymore, and I can be genuine towards him. I think of how I left him to go back to Kai, and wonder how I could possible bring it up so I can apologise.
“How have you been? How were your exams?” He asks, sitting down across from me and opening his food.
“I was literally locked up in my room for two months preparing for them! I honestly thought I would lose it. How about you?”
“Same. My parents were pulling out all these scientific theories on how to improve my studying and it was torturous.”
“Well, at least they’re over now, hey?”
“Yep! When’s your graduation?”
“Next week. It’s so weird, right? The idea of graduating.”
“Definitely. I’ll miss school.” I nearly choke on my food when Luhan says that, and I laugh at him.
“Seriously?! You’ll MISS it? I’m glad it’s over!”
“Yeah, totally. I mean, it’s tough, but think of how much tougher university is. And how much tougher work will be.”
“In my opinion, I am all ready for working. I really look forward to it. I get to meet different kinds of people and stuff like that.”
“That’s true, I guess. But I’ll miss school.”
We eat for a little bit and don’t say anything. I forgot how comfortable I feel when Luhan’s around. I forgot the way he smiles with his eyes and the way his hair curls to one side. I was so caught up with obsessing over a failed relationship with Kai that I completely took for granted Luhan and his friendship.

“How’s Kai?” Luhan suddenly asks out of the blue.
“He got back into drugs. I broke it off just a few hours ago, actually.”
“I’m sorry.”
“No need to be.”
“Well, you look a lot better off this time around.” He laughs. I remember how heart broken I was about the first break up and compare it to today, and I blush.
“Waaa! That’s so embarrassing! Please forget that I was like that!”
“No way! I wish I took a picture, actually. It was so funny how red your face was.” He’s grinning like an idiot, and I can’t help but grin as well. He just has that effect on people.
“Enough about me. What about you?” I wiggle my eye brows at him and he cracks up.
“No! No girlfriend! You’re the only one.” I stop smiling, and look down at my empty bowl. I still feel horrible for what I did. The atmosphere has turned somber.
“For the record, I regret leaving that night. It turned out to be a crappy relationship. I’m so sorry I left you. So sorry I crushed you like that.”
Luhan touches my hand, and I look up at him. He doesn’t have the cheeky spark in his eyes, and his face is completely serious.
“It’s fine. Don’t worry about it, ok? I’m a man. I can handle a little heart break.” The corner of his mouth goes up, and I try to reciprocate a smile, but I can’t.
“I… Can I make it up to you somehow? It’ll really make me feel less guilty.”
He sits back in his chair, and puts his hand under his chin, thinking.
“Actually, there is a way…”
“Yeah…” I sit forward in my chair, eager to hear it.
“Go out with me.” He grins, and I roll my eyes. Of course he requests that. I don’t feel burdened though, and instead feel happy that he even wants to spend time with me. He doesn’t seem as annoying as I remember him.
“Fiiiine. Ok.”
He cheers and fist pumps the air, and I can’t help but grin at how silly he looks. He sits back down and looks at me with his serious face on.
“Question.”
“Mmm?”
“Is it a first date, a re-do of the second date, or a third date?” His question takes me by surprise, and I have to think about it.
“Umm, what do you want it to be?”
“I would like to see this as a re-do or a third date, because you don’t understand how disheartening it is working from number one all over again!” I laugh at how important this question seems to be to him.
“Well, how about we clear our past history and start over? Today is our first date.” I don’t want to carry luggage into this new relationship. I learnt from my one with Kai. Things will be different the second time around, so I should never expect the other person to still be the same. I want to do my best with Luhan. He makes me happy.
“Well, I think that’s a very good idea.” He smiles at me, and I appreciate the way his eyes twinkle in the light.
“Great!” I get up and so does Luhan. We throw out our rubbish and I get my shopping.
“You know, this was kind of shabby for a first date. This won’t go on my record and be held against me, will it?” The uncertainty in his voice makes me melt. He’s too cute.
“I thought it was a great first date.” I say. Luhan wraps an arm around me as we leave the shops and start to walk towards my house.

We reach my house, and Luhan walks me to the door.
“Do you have a rule against kisses on the first date?” Luhan asks. He stands in front of me with his hands in his pockets.
“It depends on how I feel.”
“And how do you feel?”
“Today, I feel like it will be a good thing.” I grin at him and he mirrors it. He takes a step towards me and I lean on the front door. He lowers his head, and I close my eyes. Seconds later, his lips are on mine and not one image of Kai has flashed into my head. Instead, I see fireworks and my heart absolutely loses it. I smile against his lips and kiss him back. I’m free from Kai, but I will never forget him. You don’t forget your first love that easily, but I’m going to keep going forward. I’m going to go forward with Luhan if he’ll stay with me. I like the future I see with Luhan, and I hope he wants to see a future with me in it.
Luhan pulls away, and hugs me. I hug him back tightly and smile. Here’s hoping for a bright future filled with laughter and happiness. Here’s hoping that bright future will be with this certain someone. My story with Kai may have ended, but my story with Luhan has just begun.
