Fateful Encounter

I liked to think that Kai and I grew distant because of how busy we were constantly preparing for finals. But I know it wasn’t because of that. We both knew it.

Finals are in two weeks, and I haven’t left my room in 3. Always studying, it was almost robotic. I don’t even know if I’m retaining any information at all, honestly. I am in desperate need of a break, and going for a walk is appealing, but the crap that happened the last time I went for a walk seriously puts me off of them. I throw down my pen, and sit back on my chair. Nope. I can’t study anymore. I’m going to go nuts. I grab my phone and hurry out of the house. As I enjoy the fresh air, I wonder what Kai is doing? We’ve only met up a few times in the last month and a half, but none of them were even slightly similar to how we used to be. Compared to how often we used to be around each other, I’m worried our relationship is going downhill. Some of the meet-ups he would be high, and some of them he would be depressed. The worst one was when he was drunk and depressed.

~Flashback~
Just as I finish my dinner, there’s a knock on my door. Who could it be? I open the door, and it’s Kai. I was pleasantly surprised, seeing as I hadn’t seen him in a few days. He stumbles into the house, and I feel my stomach clench.
“Kai? Are you alright?” I’m concerned about him. I’m always concerned nowadays. Kai is starting too feel more like my child than my boyfriend. Is he really the same guy I met 1 year ago?
“Kai.”
He stumbles to the couch, and collapses on it. I sit next to him, and he reeks of alcohol and tobacco.
“Kai, answer me.”
“What do you want from me?!” He yells angrily. His speech is slurred and he looks so out of it.
“I’m the one who should be asking you that! You came to my house, after all!” I’m annoyed with him, here he is wasting my time while I need to study. I don’t have the time or patience to deal with his problems.

Woah. Wait a second. Where did that come from? I don’t remember a time when I’ve ever been annoyed with Kai. The stress must be getting to me.
“Don’t talk to me like that you stupid!” He grumbles. “Don’t sit there and be useless. Get me some coke! I haven’t had any in like 2 days.”
I feel absolutely disgusted with him. How dare he treat me like this?
“Kai, you’re drunk. Get out of my house.” I say. I try to put as much anger into as I can. It backfired on me. Kai suddenly whirls around and grips my shoulders, his eyes are blood-shot and his breath smells disgusting. I cough and try to get away from him, but his grip tightens.
“OW! That hurts! Let me go!” I try to squirm out of his grasp, but he doesn’t budge. His fingers are digging into my skin. They’re going to leave bruises. He’s never done something like this before.
“Did you just try to order me? YOU get out. You skank!” He inches his face closer, and I’m suddenly scared. He’s unpredictable right now, and I don’t know what he’ll do next.
“Kai! Please! Stop it!”
“I told you I loved you. You clearly don’t love me.”
“You’re drunk and saying things that don’t make sense! Just go home!”
“Fine! I will! Don’t come running back to me, though.”

He shoves me to the ground, and I sit there dazed while he gets up and tries to walk to the door. He finally makes it and stumbles outside, slamming the door behind him. I can feel tears running down my cheeks. I was so scared of him, scared of how he was acting and scared for myself. Something could have seriously gone wrong, and I’m lucky that he didn’t hit me. He’s the absolute worst when he’s drunk.

~End of flashback~

I’m sure he’ll stop after exams, though. I have faith in him. He stopped for me once, and he can do it again. I get home and go back into my room to study. My parents were supposed to still be on their trip on the day of graduation, but they managed to negotiate so that they would be here. It’s so surreal that I will be graduating in three weeks. Surreal but amazing -I’ll be free.

My phone suddenly starts to ring. It’s Kai. This is one of the rare times when he calls me instead of texting.
“Hello?”
“Hey, TJ!” I’m surprised he sounds happy, but it gives me hope.
“Hi there.” I smile, happy that he sounds happy.
“So, I know you are super stressed about exams, but I’ll give you something to look forward to, ok? When do your exams finish?” Kai sounds more like old Kai, and I get butterflies in my stomach thinking about it.
“The last one ends at 4 on Thursday.”
“Thursday in two weeks, am I right?”
“Yep.”
“Great. After your exams, come to my house.”
“Ok!”
“Ok, bye. I love you.”
“Love you too.”
He hangs up, and I can’t wipe the grin off my face. I’m really looking forward to spending time with him after finals.
