The Endless Sea

A young man stood by the sea shore, staring beyond the horizon of the vast waters of the ocean. It seemed as if he was lost in deep thought but in actuality he was just clearing his head. The reason for this was because of the career orientation that took place earlier that day. He’d realized that he’d never fully identified what it was he wanted to do with his life. It wasn’t that he’d never thought about it before, he already had, several times in the past in fact. He’d tried very hard to think about where he wanted to go with his life and back then he thought that he wanted to be an athlete so he’d joined his schools soccer team and he did really well in it, but then he’d started to lose interest in it because it became monotonous to him. Like somehow all of the achievements he’d gotten from it meant nothing. As if, he didn’t belong there and he’d been having these thoughts for months now and the career orientation just confirmed that he didn’t belong in sports. There was just something missing.

The blaring sound of his phone ringing brought him out of his musings. On the other line of the phone was the familiar voice of his father.

“Donghae! Where are you right now? It’s already late and you’re still out!” His father’s concerned voice was very much endearing. His old man still treated him like a kid even though he was already 18 years old.

“Ah, mianhae Appa, I forgot the time. I’ll be home soon, so don’t worry anymore, okay?” He responded quite apologetically.

“Aish! Fine, fine. You better hurry up, your mother’s already cooked dinner so we’re waiting for you.” With that his father hung up the phone. Donghae smiled, amused by his father’s concern. Pocketing his phone, he made his way home, the walk wasn’t really that long, and it only took about twenty minutes to get back to his house from the beach.

Arriving home, he was greeted by the sight of his father standing impatiently by the door. Inwardly, he cringed since he knew he was going to get scolded. His parents were just that over protective. He got an earful from his father, scolding his about the dangers of being out so late and how it was bad for his health. Instead of grumbling angrily against his dad he merely took the scolding accepting it easily since it was wrong of him to worry his parents so much.
Right after dinner, Donghae and his father sat by their back porch, silently relaxing under the glittering light of the stars. It was his father who broke the silence.

“You always loved being out by the sea, Donghae.” Donghae looked at his father curiously, it was the first time he’d ever heard his father sound so nostalgic.

“Ever since you were a kid you always loved the sea. Did you know your mother had dreams about the sea when she was pregnant with you. It was always weird, having the same dream about the sea over and over again. When you were born she immediately named you Donghae meaning East Sea.” His father chuckled to himself as if remembering something funny.

“I couldn’t stop her. Looking back now, it was so funny. Your mother threatened me bodily harm when I tried to make her change your name.” His father shook his head nostalgically.

“Now, I guess it makes sense that you’d love the sea. Whenever you’re troubled you always go right to the beach, so I know there’s something bothering you.” Donghae sighed, not really knowing what to say. His father always did know how to read him. Minutes passed by before finally Donghae spoke.

“I’m just really confused right now. I don’t know what it is I want to do with my life.” He watched closely, waiting for his father to respond.

His father laughed loudly. Donghae didn’t know what it meant.

“Ah, foolish child. You’re only eighteen, of course you wouldn’t know what you want yet. It’s not something you can know easily.” His father patted his shoulder good naturedly, amusement still on his face.

“But I-I don’t want you and Umma to be disappointed in me!” There it was, his father thought his precious son’s problem.

“Donghae, your Umma and I will never be disappointed in whatever it is that you’ll choose to do as long as it makes you happy. That is the only thing we wish for our sons. That you and your brother will be able to live a healthy and happy life.” Donghae felt the tears gather in his eyes. He was just so overwhelmed. He expected his father to scold him for not thinking about his future but instead he learned that whatever it was that he’d end up doing, he had his parents support.

“Ah! What a cry baby son I have! Wipe those tears away now. Wouldn’t want anyone to think you’re a cry baby now don’t we?” Donghae tackled his father in a tight hug which his father returned just as tightly.

It felt like the weight on his shoulders disappeared. He smiled brightly at his dad. It was times like this when he felt especially grateful that he had such an awesome and understanding parents. As the night drew deeper, his father ushered him back to the house, telling him to get some rest.

The following morning, as he travelled to school he felt really in a good mood. School blew by quickly and graduation rolled around, he’d graduated with high marks which landed him on a good spot in Seoul National University. His family had never been so proud of him.

Getting into the university was such a big deal. Not many people could get a scholarship from there, so many people from his neighbourhood wished him well. His parents arranged everything he needed for college. Being from a middle class family meant they didn’t really have much money but at least they had enough. Enough to provide Donghae with his most essential need like a nice place to stay, allowance budgeted to last a month. Enough to help Donghae start the next chapter of his life in Seoul.

Just as the seas brought in the tides of change, Lee Donghae had no idea that his entire destiny was about to finally come into fruition.
