Diabolic
Awkward meeting
Chapter 1
It is not very common for a Dutch teenager to visit South-Korea. It is even less possible that said teenager ever gets in contact with SM entertainment, or even knows of the company’s existence anyway. That is what I have been telling myself for the past few weeks anyway. Impossible, no way, etcetera. I learned something out of that though. Nothing is written in stone. Even when you think the world is shit, things can change. Though you might at first not think it’s in the good way…
‘Nora, don’t be slow!’ Anisha was waving at me form the end of the escalator, while she was swaying her trolley back and forth. She was the type of person that ALWAYS had energy. The type of person that talks too loud, eats too much and yet manages to stay annoyingly skinny. In the past, I hadn’t been able to stand her. But I couldn’t stand anyone, anyway. I only had three real friends, who were with me on that day. Anisha now was one of them.
Kate had stepped on the escalator before me and had now almost reached Anisha. ‘Easy, An. Boy bands are just a small part of Korea’s population. It’s not like we’re going to bump in to Super Junior as soon as we leave the airport.’
Anisha sniffed. ‘I don’t want to bump into Super Junior. I wanna see SHINee! And I hate it when you call me that, it makes me feel like I am some prude British person.’
‘And that is exactly why I call you that.’ Kate whipped her hair back. Kate, who, despite her Korean father, was the tallest of us all, looked intimidating while doing it. Anisha stubbornly tried to intimidate her but her curly, dark brown ,static hair ended up in her face. I scoffed.
‘Charming!’ Said Jay, who had only now reached the escalator and stood behind me. She moaned as she put down the reason for her lateness, her gigantic suitcase.
‘It surprises me that you can even lift that thing.’ Jay rolled her eyes.
‘A girl can never bring enough stuff with her. Well, at least normal girls.’ She glanced meaningfully at my travelling bag, which looked ridiculously tiny compared to her enormous luggage.
‘You know, if I would try to hit you right now you wouldn’t get away so easily with that thing.’
‘Are you guys coming or what?’ Anisha had neglected her petty argument with Kate and was wobbling on her toes. I sighed and got on the escalator. Jay followed.
‘And so, the four girls arrived in the land of K-pop and kimchi.’ Jay had the annoying habit of seeing life as one big novel. She was a pretty good writer, at least when she didn’t do it out loud. She told me she also wrote lyrics and raps but she hadn’t let any of us read them yet. It really was a pity she wasn’t able to make a living out of it. Her parents had apparently decided that she had to become a lawyer.
‘And it is all because of me!’ Yelled Kate, as soon as Jay and I got of the escalator.
‘You mean, because of your parents.’ Anisha deadpanned.
‘Whatever, it was I who did the suggestion. Don’t be mean to me, I am the only one of you guys that speaks Korean. You need me!’
‘Well, that’s a first.’ Jay said but she made sure that Kate – who was now walking towards the exit while laughing evilly – wouldn’t be able to hear it. Kate was now singing a TVXQ song. I didn’t know the name of the song. To be honest, I wasn’t a huge fan of K-pop and neither was Jay. Only Kate and Anisha were the enthusiasts of our group.
The airport only was a fantastic place. It was full of unnecessary luxury. There were indoor gardens, sleeping rooms and even a museum. I would have loved to check it out if I hadn't been so tired of the long trip from Amsterdam to Seoul. I was grumpy, hungry and dirty. When I was in that state, it usually didn't take long for my mind to move in the wrong direction.
Outside of Incheon International Airport we were waited upon by a man in a suit. Kate frowned when she saw him. The man was wearing a shirt and a black corduroy pants. He walked straight towards Kate and bombed her with questions, at least I thought he was. I didn't speak Korean after all. The man showed Kate a card he had grabbed from his pocket.
'What's wrong?' Jay asked Kate when the man had stopped speaking. She was the one who knew Kate the longest. Jay had always been the first one to notice if Kate was upset.
'I don't know this man. My parents usually send the same driver for me but it is a different guy this time. His name is Baek, by the way. I hope my parents haven't fired the other driver, I really liked him.' Kate pulled at her black leather jacket and began to absently touch her ear piercing.
The car ride was rather awkward. Beak's English apparently wasn't very good. It lacked in both vocabulary and grammar. Not to mention his sharp accent. He tried his best to talk to us though. He even tried to pull of a joke and although it wasn't very funny, I laughed anyway. I kind of had a weakness for jokes that weren't very funny. In my strange way of thinking, not being funny made them even funnier.
By the time we had reached our destination, even Kate -who thanks to her parents was used to all the luxury in the world- looked surprised. It was like an oasis in the crowded city. A big, very modern looking house, with windows covering half of the wall. It had a metallic touch on the outside but the inside looked comfy.
'O my god, forget about all that mean things I've said about your parents, Kate, this is awesome!' Anisha ran to the door before anyone could have stopped her. Apparently, she had managed to get a hold of Kate's key. Kate ran after her, playfully scolding her like some old hag. Jay was quietly humming something and slowly walked towards them, still with the gigantic suitcase. I came after her.
'You don't seem very excited, and I don't mean because of that thing.'
'I can't seem to fully... enjoy this, you know.' I looked at her. Her face showed an emotion that always lingered inside her. Her dark brown eyes were staring at the ground and she was frowning, as if she could see something I couldn't see. She didn't want to show me what she saw either.
'Forget about it, I don't want you to worry about things you can't change. I will be okay.' I nodded. That was Jay. Suffering in silence and not bothering anyone with it. I had tried to stop her many times but eventually I had stopped trying. Maybe that was the reason for Jay being a good writer, just to blow of all the steam with words.
When we entered the building, we ran around like a group of wild chickens, the sound of our delighted screaming must have been heard by many Koreans.
It was a house of scandalous luxury. The flatscreen tv had the size of a cinema screen, de beds had massage functions, there was a whirlpool in the bedroom and the bedroom had a walk in closet. The floor was covered in a gorgeous bordeaux red carpet. In all the excitement Anisha began making something she called a carpet angel. Kate was deciding the places for her future Korean clothes in the closet and Jay was testing out the Nintendo Wii and the television, which were also in the bedroom. I decided I would take a shower. In all the rush of that morning I hadn't been able to.
I always found it a heavenly feeling to get rid of my dirty clothes. Especially when you knew the shower had a rosewater function. I frowned when the water splashed down my face.
The school bathroom was empty. It felt great to finally reach a place without any noise. The mirrors in the room were written on. It were all useless messages. Someone giving a phone number, apparently giving the caller an opportunity to have a friend with benefits, a caricature of a teacher I hated and several death wishes on varying persons. I saw my face in the mirror. Today, it had been a bit worse than usual. Usually, it had just been insults and stupid jokes. That morning they had tried to made me trip into a river while I was cycling. It was my own fault, I just stood out too much. The girl in the mirror had red curly hair, freckles and icy blue eyes, that were red because of the tears. In my opinion, the freckles looked like symptoms of a disease. In the heat of the moment, I turned the knob of the crane and splashed the water into my face.
I blinked and grunted, annoyed at the fact that even the touch of water recalled bad memories. I tried my usual remedy: good memories. Kate's smile, Anisha's dance moves and Jay's stories. I smiled and realised how blessed I was with the awesome friends I had. While washing my hair, I began to hum a Christina Aguilara song. I liked singing in bathrooms the best. Even the worst singer couldn't possibly sound that bad with the characteristic echo of a bathroom. Because of my peaceful state, the racket that suddenly emerged was even more of a shock.
'An-yong-ha-se-yo!'
'Who are those people?'
'O my god!'
Without thinking I ran out of the shower, grabbing a towel to cover most of my body. I was sure something unpleasant was going on. A dangerous situation involving my friends. I was strong now, I could help them. After everything that had occurred at school I had decided to learn taekwondo.
As a warm up, I kicked the door open. After that, I ran through the hall, my feet touching the soft carpet. The voices came from the bedroom. I believed it was Anisha.
I jumped and kicked the door again. I kept the towel in place with one of my hands.
Kate, Anisha and Jay were standing close together. Jay was frowning but Kate and Anisha looked overjoyed, which seemed weird to me, why would they be happy in a dangerous situation? That was when I saw it. I cursed myself because I had been too focused on my friends to look for mu enemies. Five boys were standing in the room. They were all oddly dressed and they looked kind of bewildered.by my entrance. When I saw that the youngest looking one of them was holding Anisha's wrist I slowly walked towards him. Anisha, Kate and Jay were now staring at me.
When I had reached the boy I pulled his hand away from Anisha's wrist.
'Who are you guys and what are you doing here? What were you doing that made her scream?' I spoke to them in English. Up until now, I had spoken to Jay, Anisha and Jay in Dutch.
The boy stared speechlessly at his wrist and after that he stared at me. While he did that I noticed how perfect his face was. It was like it was airbrushed. He probably could fool anyone if he would pose as a girl but there was something in his eyes, a mischievous twinkle perhaps, that showed that he was without doubt male.
The boy didn't seem like he was planning to say anything anytime soon. When I glared threateningly at him one of the other boys laughed.
'He isn't used to girls being hostile to him.' This boy was an entirely different type. In my own country, some people would definitely think he was gay. He was wearing eyeliner and even a bit of lipstick. He had blond hair and he wore a pink pants. I was jealous of his high cheekbones.
'My name is KEY. That boy that is staring at your breasts is Taemin. The tall guy's name is Minho, the boy with the big nostrils is Jonghyun and the one who is too scared to even look at you is ONEW.'
He spoke with an accent but his vocabulary was quite good. A lot better than mister Baek's. I frowned at some of the guy's weird names but decided not to comment. Maybe that was normal in Korea?
I observed the other three boys. The tallest one of them was probably the most athletic one of them as well. He was the kind of guy that suited any woman’s taste. The classic tall, dark and handsome type. Though, I had learned to watch out for persons like that.
Jonghyun stood next to him. He was also incredibly handsome, though KEY had been right about his nostrils. He was the most muscled one, I knew that because, apparently he liked to show it. His shirt looked awfully tight. With that, I concluded that Jonghyun was a show off.
ONEW was standing on the other side of Jonghyun. His hair was also blond but it didn't really fit him like the way it fitted KEY. Maybe that was because KEY's style screamed hipster all over the place. ONEW's style looked a lot more authentic than KEY's. He also seemed a bit less confident than him. At least at this moment. He averted my eyes and I got the feeling he was desperately trying not to stare as explicitly as Taemin.
Kate slowly cleared her throat. Apparently, she was recovering from the shock of seeing these guys. Or the shock witnessing me kicking the door open while dressed in a towel. Maybe it was both.
'Nora, these are the members of SHINee.' She spoke in English as well.
'The members of what? Shiny?' Anisha rolled her eyes.
'They are the guys from the k-pop group that made that song which I have been wanting to sing with you for ages.' I gave her my best poker face.
'Don't tell me you can't remember.' I shrugged. Anisha sighed.
'Here we are in one room with SHINee and only three of us actually know them, what a waste!' Jay scoffed. 'Make that two. I don't listen to k-pop that often, remember. You only convinced me to like 2ne1.'
'The only k-pop band I know is TVXQ.' I said.
The five boys looked kind of disappointed at those declarations. I understood them. I had heard that most of those k-pop bands - or any band or idol, for that matter- worked their butts off for international fans.
I was starting to feel more and more conscious of the fact that the only thing that was covering me was a towel. I also felt stupid because of all the drama I had unnecessarily triggered. However, before I would retreat, I was going to make them tell.my why they were here in the first place. We had closed everything before our little discovery trip through the house. Kate apparently thought the same way. She began to speak to them in Korean, which, because of her tall foreign appearance, startled SHINee a bit.
I noticed Taemin's gaze lingering on Anisha's wrist. KEY at the same time hastily answered all of Kate's questions. Kate's eyes became darker with each word he spoke. After a while she grabbed her I-phone, which was decorated with a case with a black bunny. Kate's voice became louder with every word she spoke in her phone. She sighed and averted our eyes.
'You guys, I'm so, so sorry.' Anisha touched her shoulder.
'Don't be sorry! We just met SHINee. Why would you be sorry?'
'I think we will stay in Korea for a time that is way longer than we originally planned.' Jay frowned and shot some distrustful looks at the members of SHINee.
'Kate, quit fudging and tell us what's going on.' Kate still refused to look at us.
'My parents tricked us. Us and your parents. They made a deal with SM entertainment to make us live with SHINee for one month, for a talk show called Diabolic.'

Notes
Hellohello~~ I am Fee-tan, a newbie here. I recently discovered that I totally love SHINee and as it is natural for me to fantasize about everything I like, this soon came to exist in my mind. I am not used to write about real persons and I think it is a very hard thing to do. I am not an extreme Shawol, and I know very little about Korea, so feel free to correct me if I make any mistakes. I could also use some help in grammar >.<Also, I know the way things happen in this story is very unrealistic - especially when it comes to how the heck the girls got into this situation in the first place- but that is not my main aim. I want the characters to be realistic. So, if any one of them -or all of them- is/are a Mary Sue/ Mary Sue's just point it out.
Thank you very much for reading! I hope you enjoy it :D
