Cursed Chain of Heartthrob Tears

[03] - Request ~Kyungsoo~ (2)

Jaerim didn’t lose her smile as she walked home from school that day. “Do Kyungsoo is a really nice guy.”, she thought to herself. She can still feel his hand against hers as she kept repeating the scenes in her head. She still couldn’t believe it. She just couldn’t believe any of it.
Jaerim did her daily routine when she got to school the next day. She greeted everyone annyeong and good morning and how are you and all. She greeted Kyungsoo and even Sica and her friends just as enthusiastically like always. She did it like nothing happened the day before.
“Hey Noye!”, she heard Sica called like she always did.
But even before Jaerim could turn to her, Kyungsoo shot a glare at the mean girl. “I-I mean… Jaerim-ah~!”, she called out again.
“Wea, Sica-ya?”, she said in her usual tone as she made her way to Jessica Jung and her friends.
“Did you do your homework in Science?”, she asked her. She already knew what was coming.
“Yeah~”, Jaerim replied.
“Bring it out and let us copy it. We forgot to do ours.”, Jaerim heard her say as her friends grinned.
“Okay…”, she simply replied before going back to her seat to get her notebook. She knew Kyungsoo was trying to make eye-contact as she did so, but she didn’t dare to look at him. It was fine with her. Sica’s been doing this to her all year, and she’s already gotten used to the mean girl and she just didn’t want any more trouble like the one happened yesterday.
“Ya~ Jaerim-ah~ What are you doing? Don’t give it to them…”, one of her friends whispered, but she just smiled at him, saying it’s alright.
“Here you go Sica-ya~”, she said, handing Jessica her homework. But even before Jessica got her hands on it, there was a loud *BANG!*as Do Kyungsoo slapped his desk.
“NOYE!”, he said. Trembling, Jaerim turned to him, not saying a word.
“Let me have that. I haven’t done mine.”, he said not making any eye-contact.
“Later Kyungsoo-ya~ After Jessica’s done, okay?”, she tried her best to sound like herself though she didn’t know what to do. She just wanted to vanish at the moment, like most of the time.
Jessica smiled at what she said, but Kyungsoo didn’t seem to be happy about it. “NO! I want it now., this time, he said the words, looking straight into Jaerim’s eyes.
Jaerim got the message. Kyungsoo was doing it for her, and she didn’t know why. Hesitating for a moment, she obeyed and gave her notebook to Kyungsoo. She went back to her seat, not daring to look back at Jessica and her gang.

Do Kyungsoo wasn’t even copying. He just hid Lee Jaerim’s notes under his desk. Science was their second period, and first period is almost over.
“Sica… what do we do?”, Yuri asked her.
“Shut up! I’m trying to think!”, she said back.
Everything was going just the way Jessica wanted it to. She had her own Noye in school, buying her bread whenever she says so, providing homework every day. She liked having stupid Lee Jaerim around, getting her do things for her.
Do Kyungsoo is being too selfish. He’s been ignoring her since forever and now he’s stealing her slave. If it wasn’t for his sasaeng fans, Jessica would’ve stood up to the guy, but she knew she was powerless compared to the most popular boy in school.
“Hey you!”, she whispered to one of the fools who always stand up for Lee Jaerim. “Give me your homework.”
“No way~”, he said.
“Don’t be a fool and give it to me! Or else, I’m gonna tell Noye what you feel about her and let’s see what happens…”, blackmailing was Jessica’s favorite hobby, and her talent comes in very handy anytime she needs it.
Jessica managed to get her homework done before Science class. But one way or another, she’ll make Do Kyungsoo pay for embarrassing her, making her look powerless.

Do Kyungsoo didn’t let Jaerim get off his sight all day. Every time someone tries to boss her around, he’d glare at them to shoo them away, or maybe tell Jaerim to do something for him so they won’t get the chance to.
Kyungsoo’s just doing it for the girl’s sake. She’s letting people push her around and that is not right. Nobody deserve that kind of treatment even Jessica Jung… or not. But anyways, Kyungsoo just can’t bear to see someone like Lee Jaerim be treated like that.
Kyungsoo has his own table at the cafeteria. He never lets anyone sit with him, ever. Well, except today, of course. He asked Jaerim to sit with him so the other kids wouldn’t have her walking around making her get random stuff for them.
“Why are you doing this?”, he heard her ask.
“Why shouldn’t I?”, he asked back.
“Why do it now? Why not before? Why do it now, when I’ve already gotten used to it?”, her words pinched Kyungsoo. He’s never thought of it before. He’s never asked himself those questions before. He’s been seeing those kids do the same stuff to this girl over and over every single day. And why play Mr. Hero now, when she’s already beaten up by them?
“Maybe this is the only time when I just can’t take it anymore. Maybe this is the only time when I decided to… try.”, he said, realizing it at the same time. “Maybe for the first time in my life, this is the only moment when I tried… to care.”
He waited for her to respond, but she didn’t. She just stared at him and looked away when her eyes began to get teary. He’s seen it before, even how much she tries to hide it like she always did. He doesn’t know if Jaerim still remember, but on the first day of school, Jaerim cried. She cried on the first time Jessica and her friends bullied her.
Kyungsoo saw her crying on the hallway after school. He offered her his handkerchief, but she didn’t accept it. Instead, she just thanked him and smiled. She stopped crying and told him that she wants to be his friend. But she never got to be, because he never let anyone in. He began to gain popularity in school and he never had a proper conversation with Lee Jaerim again.
After that day, he never saw Lee Jaerim’s tears again. She became that cheerful girl that they all came to know. But yesterday, when he felt teardrops on his hand, he remembered. He remembered that weak girl from the first day of school. That weak girl, that he saw crying even before anyone thought she never cries. He remembered that girl that he saw in a way that nobody else did.

Lee Jaerim spent days being Do Kyungsoo’s servant, days… until it became weeks. He treated her like a noye in front of people just for the show. He’d make her wait for him in front of school every morning to carry his bag for him. He’d make her carry it wherever he goes.
But behind everybody’s eyes, she had a friend. She found a friend in a place that nobody knows about. She had a friend that protects her from all the pain that she used to feel, a friend that she’s been waiting for and finally came.
The way Jaerim looked at Kyungsoo changed. Every time she sees him, her heart doesn’t do jumping jacks anymore. She doesn’t get all excited whenever he walks in, and she doesn’t look at him from a far anymore.
But the butterflies never left her stomach. Instead, they flew inside of her in a different rhythm. Instead of feeling her heart skip a beat every time she looks into his eyes, she feels a warmth inside of her, warmth that somehow made her feel like everything will be alright.
One day, after school, Kyungsoo pulled Jaerim in corner where nobody can see them.
“Ya! What are you doing?!”, she yelled at him, afraid that someone might see.
“It’s okay…”, he said as if reading her mind. “Do you know what day it is today, Jaerim-ah?”
“Yeah~ what about today?”, she asked, confused.
“You don’t know, do you?”, he said. “Okay… What year is it?”
“2005…”, she answered.
“Yes, of course! Very good! It’s 2005!”, he said enthusiastically. “What month is it?”
“Uhhh~ It’s November…”, she answered again, still confused.
“Okay, good! Now… what day is it?”, he asked again looking more exited.
“Uhhh… it’s the 24th?”, she answered on more time.
“Yes! Exactly! Now… does that ring a bell?”, he asked again, but she really has no idea what he’s talking about. “C’mon… you didn’t know?”
He waited a few more seconds, but Jaerim just didn’t know how to respond. “Okay, fine… I’ll say it. Last month, 24th of October, was the day I announced that you will be my noye…”
“Oh… really? But… Hey! You’re celebrating because I’ve been your NOYE for a month now???”, she said, pretending to be hurt.
“What? No!”, he said. “I’m celebrating because I’ve got a friend that lasted for a month now… Here…”
He gave her a box and she opened it. “What is this?”, she asked him.
“A keychain, duh?”, he replied.
“I know it’s a keychain! I just don’t get why you have to put it in a box…”, Jaerim said, loving the little keychain on her hand.
“Well… putting something in a box makes people think it’s expensive!”, he joked before laughing and taking the keychain from her.
“Hey! Give it back!”, she yelled at him, trying to get the keychain back. They kept fooling around as Kyungsoo finally gave in.
“Okay… okay…”, he said, still laughing. “Here… I’ll be the one to put it.”, he said as he fixed it on Jaerim’s bag.
“Kumawo~ Kyungsoo-ya… And I’m sorry because I didn’t know what today was…”, she apologized. “I’ll give your gift tomorrow, okay?”
They bid each other goodbye before going home.

“Yuri-ya!”, Jessica called. “Where are those pictures I asked you to take?”
“Here!”, she said, giving it to her. “You won’t believe it Sica-ya… It came out better than I expected. Kyungsoo gave her a keychain today. And it’s all in there.”
Sica browsed the photos, feeling contented. “Good work.”, she said.
“Hey, you!”, she called out to the president of Kyungsoo’s fans club in K High, together with her friends that are also Kyungsoo’s fans. “Come here and I got you something.”
“Now… just a noye, you say, huh?”, she said, showing them the pictures. “Look at what that noye did to Do Kyungsoo… Are you just gonna let her have him like this?”

Lee Jaerim, like always, can’t get the smile off of her face as she walk back home. She kept playing with her new keychain as she skipped down the road. She felt blessed as she did so. It was like yesterday, those days when she’d just look at him from a far, that guy she likes. And now, their best of friends and even celebrating like this.
She just couldn’t believe that the world could turn around that fast.
“Well… well… well… look at what we have here…”, a pack of girls stood in front of her. They looked familiar to Jaerim. They are all students in K High.
“Oh! Annyeong…”, she greeted them.
“Don’t annyeong us, you stupid noye!”, the girl at the center said, whom Jaerim would guess be their leader. “How dare you pretend to be ‘just a servant’ to our Kyungsoo and take him away from us?”
“Wh-what??? I-I don’t know what you’re talking about…”, she lied as she hid the keychain Kyungsoo gave her. She was scared and she didn’t know what to do.
“Oh, look… she really is the nicest girl in town! Doesn’t even know how to lie…”, Jaerim’s hands trembled as the girl spoke.
“Unnie, look!”, another girl said. “I think that’s the keychain! She’s hiding it!”
Jaerim stepped back wanting to make a run for it.
“Oh no, you don’t. GET HER!!!”, their leader commanded, which is Jaerim’s cue to run.
Jaerim was never a good runner she turned from corner to corner, trying to make her way to their house. But there were just too many of them going after her. She was surrounded. She tried to climb a wall believing there’s still hope for her. But her pursuers pull her down as she hit the ground. Her body was in pain, but she tried to get up.
One of the girls threw a punch on her face and she fell down back on the ground. All of them started kicking her and slapping her throwing random punches at her. “Take that you b*tch!”, they said as they did so. Jaerim was so helpless and all she could do was cry.
They pulled her bag from her and started tearing her notes into pieces. They kicked all her books and threw Kyungsoo’s keychain in the trash can nearby. She begged them to stop. She begged them and apologized to them. “We will never forgive you, you stupid noye!”, but that was all they said to her.
“Stay away from Do Kyungsoo!!!”, was all she heard as Kyungsoo’s fans beat her up on the ground.

Kyungsoo’s been exited all night. He kept wondering what Jaerim’s gift for him could be. He kept a smile on his face as he got to the school. He was exited to meet Jaerim at the front gate where she waits for him every day. But today, she wasn’t there.
Jaerim was never late. She’s never been late because Kyungsoo told her not to be. He took his phone out to send a text message to his only contact listed on the ‘friends’ category.
Recipient: Noye Chingu
Message: Ya~ Where are you? I told you not to be late…
Kyungsoo waited for a few minutes but Jaerim didn’t reply, which is weird. Jaerim always reply on his messages within seconds. Kyungsoo just didn’t know what was going on. He called her, but her phone just rang and rang… no answer.
He began to hear noises again, something that only happens whenever Jaerim’s not around. When she’s with him, Kyungsoo forgets the whole world, and all he knows is to live his life with his friend. But when she’s not there, he begins to hear people around him, chatting, twittering, whispering, like they always did.
“Have you heard?”, he heard one asked the other.
“Yeah~ I even saw her this morning… it was awful! Poor girl…”, the other replied.
“Ya~ Who are you two talking about?”, he heard another voice join the conversation.
“What? You didn’t know? Lee Jaerim… the girl everybody in her class calls ‘noye’… you know… Do Kyungsoo’s servant…”, Kyungsoo’s heart stopped as he heard Jaerim’s name. “What happened to her?”, he thought.
“Well… what about her?”, Kyungsoo kept eavesdropping, wanting to know the answer too.
“She got beaten up…”, Kyungsoo’s whole body started to tremble at what he heard.
He didn’t know what to do. She was his only friend. And his friend got hurt. He didn’t dare to waste a moment and started towards the entrance of their building. It was his first time running in school, not caring about his image, or even what he looked like at the moment. He rushed through the hallways not caring who it was he bumped into. He just kept running and running and running. For at the moment, all he was thinking about was Lee Jaerim, the nicest girl in town, the only person he let in to his life, the only friend he has, the only girl he liked.
